English Group Classes

Modified: June 13, 2016

For the first time, English Language Programs will be offering a spoken English group class (Ling 380) and one-on-one tutoring in the Summer Quarter, in addition to their online speech training software NativeAccent. If you are preparing for the September Versant test, taking a course, meeting for tutoring, or using NativeAccent are great ways to increase your skills.

They are also introducing an updated application program for signing up for our services. We think you will find the new interface to be faster and easier to use.

Please note that beginning in Summer Quarter 2016, all of ELP’s services (group classes, tutoring, and NativeAccent) are offered as non-credit courses. These courses will appear on your transcript: the possible grades are "satisfactory" and "unsatisfactory". Although you will receive a grade, the grade will not affect your GPA. Because these course carry zero-credit, they will also not affect your courseload. Non-students, including faculty, postdocs, staff, and visiting scholars, will be registered unofficially as auditors. Both students and non-students must register for services through English Language programs (see below).

Here are some important dates for Summer quarter registration:

  • June 1, 8:00 AM to June 10, 5:00 PM: Advance registration period for Linguistics 380 opens for PhD and MFA students only on our registration pagePhd and MFA students should apply through the link on the registration page to get a permission number which can be used to enroll in Ling 380 on CAESAR.
  • June 13, 8:00 AM to June 24, 5:00 PM: Registration opens on our registration page for tutoring, NativeAccent, and Ling 380 for PhDs and MFAs, postdoctoral fellows and TGS Masters students. HOW DO I APPLY/REGISTER FOR SERVICES?

To participate in any of these services, you must fill out an online application form through one of the links that will be posted on our registration page once registration opens in June. This is a separate process from registering for a course through the University's CAESAR system. You must fill out an application for each service you would like to participate in. Please note that the system will only allow applications from eligible applicants (see above for details on eligibility and registration times). If you attempt to register too soon, you will see a message indicating that registration is not yet open.
