Graduate Assistant Position Available With the Office of Residential Academic Initiatives

Modified: April 10, 2015

Do you enjoy working with undergraduates outside of the classroom? Are you looking for a professional development opportunity beyond your research and teaching? Are you interested in living in a well-appointed campus apartment?

Graduate students who answer “yes” to all three questions should consider applying to be a Graduate Assistant to the Faculty-in-Residence. The Office of Residential Academic Initiatives oversees Northwestern’s residential communities and anticipates one GA opening for 2015-16 in Elder Residential Community, where Jacob Smith and Freda Love Smith, faculty in the School of Communication, are the Faculty-in-Residence. Located at 2400 Sheridan Road, Elder is home to 345 first-year students.

Faculty-in-Residence are visible leaders with a steady presence during evenings and weekends, thus creating occasions for casual encounters about anything from advice about academic plans to input about programming in the residential community. They organize intellectual, cultural, and social events, many of which are held in their apartment, which is integrated into the larger residential community. They often invite colleagues to visit their residence to interact with students over meals or informal presentations.

The GA is a Northwestern graduate student who serves as a part-time (20 hours per week), live-in staff member and reports to the Faculty-in-Residence. This position includes working with diverse groups of students, staff (particularly the residential community’s Residence Director, who is a full-time Residential Services staff member), and faculty.

The GA will receive a $1,000.00 monthly stipend (10 months, September-June), a meal plan to use when the campus dining halls are open (10 months, September-June), and housing accommodations (12 months, July-June). The start date will be between July 1 and July 15, 2015. The end date is June 30, 2016.
